Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys cover Joshua Davis' "Workingman's Hymn" at the Humboldt Live Sessions
Lindsay Lou & the Flatbellys have been traveling steady for the past five years across the country as well as internationally. The Michigan contingency of LLFBs all claim Joshua Davis and Steppin' In It as some of their primary influences to the vibrant Michigan music scene. While in college at MSU, Josh and Lindsay were regulars at the Green Door, a Lansing staple that featured live performances of Steppin' In It every Monday (see Steppin' In It, "Live at the Green Door" in the Earthwork Store).
Last year, while on the Voice, the Earthwork Music Collective came together in support of Josh by covering his songs in our sets and releasing videos of them. We were traveling northbound on Highway 1 in California heading to a video shoot with Chuck Johnson who runs the Humboldt Live Sessions. The night before the shoot, the band hadn't picked a song for session. We had been throwing around the idea of doing JD's, "Workingman's Hymn", but didn't feel quite confident with it. Lindsay had shed the main riff of the tune, but I had not. Lindsay made the executive decision to do the tune and spent a couple late night hours running the lyrics and arrangement of the song while the rest of the band was most likely falling asleep in their motel beds outside Eureka.
We showed up the next morning in an abandoned parking lot with a PO Box that was out of place and from a time not-so-long ago. Chuck Johnson showed up with his remote video and audio recording gear and led us to an abandoned red truck in an old factory lot. We thought it was fitting for the vibe of "Workingman's Hymn".
The artwork paired with this release is that of one of my best friends. Since elementary school. Jeffrey (Heff) Hollingsworth has a wellspring of creativity stored in the profundity of his natural mind. Currently, he is the Artistic Intern at Brewery Vivant in Grand Rapids, MI. He does contract artwork and is also developing his own path as a career artist.
"Workingman's Hymn" was recorded live, on-site in Humboldt County for the Humboldt Live Sessions. All video and audio was recorded and mastered by Chuck Johnson.
